Help! I can't remember the Newport Set!
The column at left has links to "cheat notes" for Irish set dances that have been taught through Sets in the 'Burg.
These pared-down notes omit many details -- which is not to suggest the details don't matter ;-) -- so they are most useful for dancers who are familiar with the set but want a reminder of the overall structure or the order of the figures. For example, these notes won't tell you if the gent turns the lady under when the ladies chain in the Plain Set, or if you advance and retire in waltz hold in the Cashel. But they will remind you that there are only two ladies' chains in the wheelbarrow figure of the Kilfenora, and that first sides, not second tops, are the second couple to show the lady in the Sliabh Luachra. A couple sets are added to this page each year.
The book "Toss the Feathers," by Pat Murphy (Mercier Press, 1995, ISBN 1856351157), is probably the best resource for detailed notes on sets. You can find other dance instructions online at Set Dancing News on the page Links to Other Websites.
